Hello again, It’s been another busy week so please read on. The Kimberley Christmas light switch on is at 7pm this evening with the festivities starting at 5.30 pm. Tomorrow is not only Small Business Saturday (so please shop local and support our great independent traders), it’s also the Beeston Christmas Lights switch on. [Ceremony Starts 5.00pm in the Square]
Enjoy the weekend and stay warm!
As ever, Anna
HS2 Petition I presented two petitions from Trowell residents in Parliament this week. The first was signed by over 1000 people in opposition to HS2; the second called on HS2 to find alternatives to current plans to build a 60 foot viaduct through the village.
I support HS2, though I am opposed to the viaduct, but will continue to represent all points of view. It was a delight to welcome Don Pringle Chair of Trowell Parish Council and fellow organisers of the main petition, to Parliament. You can read the full transcript of the presentation of the petitions here.
Aldi meeting seeks solution Popular supermarket chain Aldi have agreed to take another look at their delayed plans to build a new store in Stapleford. Councillors Adam Stockwell and Chris Rice joined me at a meeting with them today.
Back in 2015 Broxtowe Borough Council granted planning permission for a new supermarket off Nottingham Road with a condition Aldi first build ten new homes on the site, before the store can open. This was a reasonable request as we need houses as much as we need supermarkets and brown filed land must be used or we will lose even more of our Green Belt. In my opinion Aldi dragged their feet and now want to change the condition. Today they told me they have asked for tenders from builders to build the shell of the planned store at the same time as the houses. If no one comes forward then in my view Aldi will have to finance the houses. Broxtowe Borough Council’s planning committee meet on Wednesday and I hope they insist Aldi gets on with building the homes and a much needed supermarket.
Awsworth Primary worthy winners! I was so proud to present Awsworth Primary School with the British Council’s prestigious International School award. Under Deputy Head Ian Baxter’s guidance, Awsworth has partner schools in Mexico, India, Australia, Tanzania, Egypt, Brazil, China and Lebanon!
Evans Halshaw result Senior managers at Evans Halshaw have assured me they have issued strict instructions to all staff to stop transporter HGVs from using the Ranson Road entrance. I met residents and Toton and Chilwell Meadows Borough Councillor, Lee Fletcher after a flood of complaints. Owners of Evans Halshaw, the Pendragon Group, responded to my recent letter and we spoke on Tuesday when I was shown a confidential copy of a letter to everyone at the garage.
Scrap the cap David Kirwan, from the Royal College of Nursing (and Kimberley resident!), presented me with cards from constituents calling for the public sector pay cap to be lifted. I was pleased to tell David that the Government has agreed to fund any pay rise recommendation from the forthcoming nurses pay review. I agree with the RCN that we need to recruit and retain more nurses.
Toton housing application update Peveril Homes have submitted a more detailed application to build 282 houses on land to the west of Toton Lane. Outline planning permission for up to 500 houses was first granted by the previous Labour/LibDem controlled Borough Council. Regular readers will know that I favour a world class business park next to the planned HS2 East Midlands Hub. Broxtowe Borough Council are currently consulting on the updated plans and you can comment online here.
Christmas Tour of Parliament full The team and I were somewhat blown away by the large number of people asking to come on this years trip to Parliament! We are sorry we have run out of places. We will be doing another trip in the summer.
East Midlands Matters Having attended an East Midlands summit on infrastructure Investment on Monday, I took the opportunity to raise the question of under funding in our region during Treasury Questions.
Industrial Strategy The Government’s vision of generating and supporting an economy fit for the future, was somewhat overshadowed by the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle! You can read my full contribution to the Industrial Strategy debate here.
