News from Anna Soubry MP

Hello again,
I like the so called ‘conference recess’ as it gives me even more time to work in the constituency! I will be attending the Conservative Party conference on Monday but then it’s “business as usual”. Please enjoy the rest of the weekend.
As ever, Anna

Can you help?

On Thursday I was called by a Stapleford constituent whose daughter and 22 month old grandson have been flown home from Dominica by the British Government. Hurricane Maria has flattened the island where her daughter has lived for 9 years with her Dominican husband and his family. The daughter, who was born and bred in Stapleford, and her son left on the strong advice of the Government’s representative. The daughter’s husband remains on Dominica which is still without water or electricity and where the situation is extremely dangerous.
I am sure you will join me in saying to her and her son “your’e safe now – how can I help?”
We have secured them emergency accommodation and I want to pay a public tribute to Broxtowe Borough Council leader Richard Jackson for his tenacity in getting the family settled. But, they are not entitled to any benefits for three months, though I hope they will soon get some financial assistance as a result of considerable efforts by my team and I. If you are able to assist this family please let me know. They are very grateful for the kindness already shown by people who have given food and clothing.

Support the Iron Giant!

I have given my full support to an application for £4.5 million to restore the Bennerley Viaduct near Awsworth. Sustrans have applied to the Heritage Lottery Fund to re open the Viaduct to cyclists and walkers in particular.     I made another visit to the viaduct to meet Sustrans Regional Director Matt Easter, Community Engagement Officer Kieran Lee and Network Development Officer Bill Tomson.
This is a fantastic project that will greatly rely on volunteers. If you would like to get involved please contact bill.tomson@sustrans, and check out their website

Toton’s future – report expected

The Local Enterprise Partnership (a collaboration of local councils and businesses known as D2N2) has been working on a strategy for HS2 at Toton Sidings. Apparently, their proposals will be published on Monday. I say apparently because the huge committee working on the plan has not involved representatives from the community nor local MPs, including me.
I am told a Garden Village is on the cards….You can be assured I will keep you informed and make sure both Toton and Stapleford are fully involved in the future of their communities, to ensure everyone benefits from the East Midlands HS2 hub being sited at Toton Sidings.

Attenborough Nature Reserve needs business

I had a meeting this week with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust about plans to boost support for their work at the Attenborough Nature Reserve. They have signed up well known former residents, including Chilwell’s Paul Smith and Beeston Rylander, Baroness Tina Stowell. Local businesses are now being urged to pledge their support. For more details please email me on

FOBS on the rise!

It’s more than a group to clean up and improve the station (which they are doing very well). The Friends of Beeston Station (FOBS) are also campaigning for important improvements. They have already secured better access for disabled passengers though there is a great deal more to be done. We met yesterday and I agreed to meet Network Rail and the Secretary of State, Chris Grayling and press for full access to both platforms.

I will also be making a submission as part of the consultation on the future of the East Midlands Rail franchise. It’s imperative we all support Beeston Station which has huge potential to provide even better rail services.
If you would like to join FOBS please contact me.
