The Council has had to find £975,000 savings from the budget for the forthcoming year, having lost £611,000 (43%) of its Government grant since 2016/17 and had its New Homes Bonus payment reduced by £364,000.
As part of the Council’s budget, approved at the full Council meeting this week, the following was agreed:
- No reduction in services to the public
- No increase in Council Tax for 2017/18
- Completing the increase in Garage Rents to a fair market value to ensure that the costs incurred in maintaining the garages are met by only those that rent them
- A further 1% rent reduction for residents in Council Homes in line with the national Government commitment to reduce rents by 1% per year over four years: Broxtowe has extended this to all tenants without any of the exceptions allowed by the Government
- Continued work on the Council’s Business Strategy to reduce costs and increase income by a further £400,000 over the next two years including reducing management costs and sharing services like Revenues and Benefits with other Councils.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Richard Jackson said: “This year has seen, yet again, a very difficult Government finance settlement for Broxtowe and by the end of 2019/20, the Government will phase out the grant it provides to Councils altogether.
Some very difficult decisions have been necessary as part of the budget process but in the face of these challenges, we have done what we can to protect services that are a priority for our residents.
“The Council has already reduced its spending over the past few years by making savings on employees, sharing services, re-tendering contracts, re-designing services so they can be delivered online and raising money by becoming more commercially minded. However, we need to continue to look for new and improved ways of doing things to tackle the budget challenge. As far as we can, we will consult with local people as we do this to find the best options for the local community.”
